Over the last two years, the Self-Determination & Inclusion by Theatre (SDIT) project has worked in Portugal, Spain, and Italy to show that theatre can break down barriers.

Today, we are delighted to share the culmination of this journey: our European Handbook for Inclusion by Theatre and our latest Documentary.

The Handbook

Cultural participation is a basic human right, yet many autistic people are excluded from creative spaces. Our Handbook is a practical guide and a call to action for inclusion.

Based on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and research from our three partner countries, it provides practical strategies you can implement. Inside you'll find:

  • The "whole-theatre" approach: moving beyond acting to include technical and organisational roles.

  • Recommendations: concrete tips on structure, predictability, and building trust.

  • Lived experiences: insights from autistic participants, their families, and theatre professionals.

The Documentary

This film follows our partners in Italy, Spain, and Portugal through rehearsals and behind-the-scenes moments from the play "I am what I want to be."

It offers a raw and moving look at the transformative power of the arts. You'll see moments of newfound confidence, the joy of self-expression, and the community that grows when everyone is welcome.

Whether you are a theatre company looking to open your doors, a cultural professional, or an advocate for neurodiversity, these resources are for you.
